Express bus and pub trail across the Northern Lake District.

With express coaches around every hour the A66 route provides an interesting link between a string of traditional Lakeland hostelries. Use an adult go anywhere bus pass and plan a walk and pint or two or three!

The following are just some of the recommended real ale pubs that serve food along the route of the X4 and X5 bus route between Penrith railway station, Keswick and Cockermouth.
King's Arms, Stainton, serving Castle Eden ales tel 01768862778; The Sportsman Inn (tel. 017684 83231) and Troutbeck Inn (Tel. 017684 83635) both in Troutbeck and serving Jennings.
The White Horse at Scales (Tel 017687 79241)
In Threlkeld, at the foot of Saddleback there are the famous Salutation Inn (Tel 017687 79614)serving Theakstons and the Horse and Farrier (Tel. 017687 79688)serving Jennings.
In Keswick there are dozens of excellent pubs but our favourite is the George in St John's Street Tel. 017687 72076)

Near to the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake is the quiet charm of the Pheasant Inn, serving Bass, Jennings and Theakstons (Tel. 017687 76234.)Kirkgate, Cockermouth home of Bitter End and the Swan Inn

Cockermouth (pictured)boasts more pubs per mile than the old dock road in Liverpool used to boast. Recommended are The Bush, Castle Bar, Bitter End, Allerdale Court (Tel. 01900 823654) and the Swan in Kirkgate...but all the others are excellent and most serve the town's superb home brewed Jennings ales.

All the above pubs are within a mile of the efficient X4 and X5 service. For help planning bus times use the Traveline freephone 0800 6082608 or go to our travel page.
